General information on the Institute of German Studies
The Institute of German Studies has six departments:
In the academic year 2009/2010, the Institute of German Studies employs 53 lecturers, including visiting professors and lecturers from Germany. In addition, there are over 60 post-graduate students involved in teaching. The Institute admits c. 110 students annually.
The Institute has at its disposal: - a modern library with large holdings (84,545 volumes, of which 10% are in the reference section; special collections: microfilm, audio-visual materials, CD-ROM, periodicals), - a language laboratory with 12 cabins, - audio-visual equipment, photocopiers, - a computer room with 9 internet-connected computers; Windows 95 and Windows 2000.
The Institute of German Studies offers four types of degree courses: - first degree courses - 6 semesters, leading to the degree of B.A. (in Polish called - licencjat) (following the submission and examination of a dissertation); - M. A. courses in German, with a basic component course of 6 semesters, followed by 4 semesters of a specialised course which is completed on submission and examination of an M.A. dissertation; - in combination with any of the above three courses, students may elect to take a teaching qualification course, with 330 contact hours of classes (lectures and seminars) and 150 hours of teaching practice (classroom observation and teaching).
Graduates of German Language Teacher Training Colleges are offered a three-year M.A. course (extra-mural, fee-paying) which is completed on submission and examination of an M.A. dissertation.
All the above programmes of studies include both a compulsory and an elective element; there is also teaching practice for those taking the teaching qualification.
The compulsory courses in the basic programme for all degree courses (6 semesters) are as follows: - practical language classes (with an examination at the end of the first, second and third years), - three courses in Linguistics, each followed by an examination, - a two-semester lecture in German History (examination), - a one-semester lecture in Cultural Studies for the German-Speaking Area, which must be attended before the examination in Cultural Studies can be taken.
Elective courses must be taken in the following areas: - 4 Linguistics seminars, each of which is one-semester long (among the courses offered, Lexicology and History of the German Language are compulsory), - 6 seminars in Literature, each of which is one semester long, - 3 seminars in Cultural Studies, each of which is one semester long (examination), - 6 courses to be taken in departments other than the Institute of German Studies (of which a one-semester course in the Polish department and a one-semester course in the Philosophy department are compulsory), - 3 semesters of Physical Education.
After the sixth semester, the student selects a specialisation for the M.A. course in either German or Dutch Studies, with the additional option of taking the teacher training course. In the fourth and fifth year of the programme, there are few compulsory courses (Synonims and Stylistics); by the end of the 8th semester, the student must take an examination in in a second foreign language. Students attend M.A. seminars and specialised classes in their chosen field of study.
All classes are held in German, with the exception of elective courses taken in other faculties.
Marks are awarded on the basis of: - class attendance, - work in class and work set by the lecturer, - term papers, - examinations (written or oral).
The licencjat degree is awarded on the basis of a dissertation which is examined by a commission.
